Q. What does faith have to offer someone who has been diagnosed with an illness, or is suffering depression, or just plain stressed out? I am looking for something from more than just a therapeutic perspective.

 A. I once asked myself this very question. After I had a stroke when I was 21 and a subsequent 18 year struggle with violent mood swings and neurological disorders, I wondered where God was and asked a thousand times, “Why me?” The book Surviving Depression was the fruit of this 18 year journey in which I finally could say that I KNOW God was with me all the time. I KNOW that God is loving me always.

Each person’s struggle with faith in the midst of life’s very real challenges and tragedies is unique, which is why I’ve listed a number of different titles here and tried to point out the special strength of each one.

Facing Illness, Finding Peace

Nancy Groves

This book is particularly for someone who has just been diagnosed with a serious or chronic illness. It addresses both the person and their loved ones as they face this life-altering experience. Facing Illness, Finding Peace is meant to be a companion, a guide through the different stages of dealing with a difficult diagnoses. It includes first person narrations addressing one’s experience, reflection questions, and prayers. This book has been a favorite with chaplains because it’s small, comforting, and extremely helpful in keeping the reader from feeling isolated. I have a friend who read the book aloud to his mother who was terminally ill. It became a springboard for quiet hope and peaceful times together. learn more<<
