Q. Why does it seem that everything I hear about sex in the Church is negative? What does the Church really teach about the body and sex?

A. Today’s world is obsessed with sex. Indeed, sex matters. When you ask about the Church’s teaching on sexuality you probably are expecting a list of don’ts. Don’t have sex before marriage. Don’t have sex with someone of the same gender. Don’t use contraception while having sex. Don’t use pornographic images of sex to stimulate yourself. One of the best kept secrets of the Church, however, and one which both John Paul II and Benedict XVI are trying to get out there, is that the Church’s teaching on sex is deeply related to our desire for love. It is a profoundly positive message. More than sexual, we are relational: meant for true and intimate relationships with each other and with God. Sex is sacred. And the radical perspective of John Paul II in his theology of the body on how we as Catholics view life, love, and sexuality can transform our relationships into profound experiences of communion. The list below has some great books on the theology of the body which give reason to hope that the love we crave so deeply is, in fact, promised us by God—from the beginning.

A short but complete volume that addresses head on in a realistic and compassionate way the teachings of the Church many today struggle with: pornography, masturbation, homosexuality, fornication, and cohabitation, and marital chastity. The author has a wonderful way of holding in balance human weakness and the power of God’s grace.

In a practical yet pastoral manner, these complex and confusing issues are enlightened by a thorough understanding of the Church’s teaching on these topics. Includes an introduction by the renowned Church bioethics scholar and professor Janet E. Smith.  learn more<<

The Genius of Womanhood

Karen Doyle

To tell you the truth, this is my favorite of all the books on the list. My sister and mom wouldn't have time to plow through some of the other books listed above, but a book like this with inspiring quotes and short nuggets, sprinkled with pictures and lots of space to rest one's eyes and heart, would be something they would cherish. Not a quick read, but a way to break open John Paul II's teaching on the mystery of woman: her receptivity, sensitivity, generosity, and maternity. An ample beginning look into his teaching on the sacredness of the body, relationships, sexuality, and love.  learn more<<

Theology of the Body Thoughts and Reflections

Karen Doyle

Throughout history, human being have always asked fundamental questions about life and destiny, such as "Who am I?" and "What is love?" Modern culture attempts to answer these questions by promoting the pursuit of sexual pleasure as the answer for our yearning for intimacy. The tragedy is that after fleeting sexual encounters people often find themselves feeling hurt and unfulfilled. This is an introduction for the person who wants the real answer, which lies in the teaching of John Paul II: understanding the significance of our bodies as male and female and how the physical, embodied reality of our gender reveals spiritual truths about God and the meaning of life. Great for one's own personal development in the area of sexuality and meaning, but perfect as a gift for graduation, weddings, and anniversaries, really for anyone you care about and who hasn't yet encountered the message of the sacredness of who we are and how we are created as male and female.   learn more<<
