Feast of the Triumph of the Cross

Feast of the Triumph of the Cross
Once a year where I come from there is a huge county fair. Pumpkins piled high, baked goods, and horses, cattle, and every kind of farm animal await the visitors. More subdued yet no less attractive are displays of lovely model homes. These always feature the newest “built-in” appliances: dishwasher, freezer/refrigerator, and stove. But no matter how lovely and appealing the kitchens with the built-in luxuries appear, reality sets in at the first meal. The food in the freezer has to be defrost...

Does God Ever Leave Us?

Does God Ever Leave Us?
"We can trust that even if it seems God is delaying to save us, he never leaves us. We want God to rescue us whenever we feel out of control, vulnerable, or tempted. And we usually want it now. However, often God holds back a quick rescue because the struggle opens up every inch of our being to receive more of his divine grace. God wants more for us than we could ever desire for ourselves. We may focus on quick fixes, but God sees the big picture. He knows all that he wants for us, all that we c...

What is your favorite form of prayer?
St. Teresa of Avila said that we should pray as we can and not as we can't. That means that we can honor the way we are drawn to pray and not put ourselves down for what we consider mediocre prayer. Sometimes we feel that we can't pray as well as others do. How do we know? It doesn't really matter. God is working in each of our lives in a unique way. Our sole responsibility is to respond to what God is doing, to follow his direction, to let him do the leading. So how is God leading you right now...

Psalm 31: Prayer and Praise for Deliverance in Intercession for Peace
Let us pray for the President and world leaders as the situation regarding Syria proceeds. Let us pray with great faith in the mercy of God who alone can create the peace the world and each of us longs for. The situation is so befogged by lack of clarity and conflicting assertions of the facts and possible consequences. Let us call upon the Spirit to enlighten all with wisdom. May the angels who announced the birth of the Prince of Peace, melt the pride and fear that could lead to decisions that...

What do you know about the angels?

What do you know about the angels?
Who taught you about your guardian angel? Have you had any experiences with the protective care of an angel in your own life? Do you teach your kids about their guardian angels? Do you pray to the angels for special needs? "Our community has guardian angels who we traditionally call "men in grey." They turn up whenever one of the sisters needs help. It is interesting to listen to the stories of sisters from all over the world. When my parents were helping our sisters move in to their new convent...

A Fire that Needs to Burn Brightly

A Fire that Needs to Burn Brightly
In the twelfth chapter of the Gospel of Luke, Jesus says, “I have come to set the world on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” (Lk 12:49) Jesus doesn’t mince words here. Jesus is calling his disciples to be pyromaniacs! Of course, Jesus isn’t asking his followers to burn down buildings. He is looking for people who, everywhere they go, are ready and willing to spark fires for the glory of God. For instance, Saint Paul became a brilliant light for Christ after his conversion on th...

Sr. Susan Helen - Still Among Us
Tomorrow the long line of Pauline sisters, family and friends wound its way down the hill behind our publishing house to the mausoleum to lay to rest our dear sister, Susan Helen Wallace.
