The Artist without a Studio: Webathon Novena Day 3

The Artist without a Studio: Webathon Novena Day 3

Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them” (Rom 12:6).

For the Chosen People, the Promised Land was move-in ready, “with houses you did not build and olive groves you did not plant” (see Dt. 6:11). Our “Promised Land” (a former warehouse) needs a bit of attention in order to be outfitted for the needs of our mission. We're on the move already! With a daily goal of $4,500, we hope that during this Webathon Novena, you can help us get to the Promised Land!

Much of what the Daughters of St Paul do involves technology, but no technology can replace the creative gifts God has given our sister-artists. Here in the Boston publishing house, Sister Laura Rosemarie and Sister Mary Joseph are two of our sister-artists. (You'll meet Sister Mary Joseph later in the week; she also handles much of our graphic design for kids books!)

Sister Laura Rosemarie is currently illustrating the mysteries of the Rosary, after graduating from the Atelier-Lack School of Fine Arts (Minneapolis) where she trained in charcoal and oil portraiture, drawing and illustration. Her passion for God and for art shows in the almost photographic quality of her paintings, as well as in a deeply human element that can surprise the viewer into an encounter with grace.

For now, Sister Laura does her sketching and painting in an empty office that offers some (limited) natural light. There is not enough room in the office for her art supplies and completed works, so these are stored in a curtained-off area behind the Design Department. This year, we hope to renovate a portion of our former sales department into an ample studio where Sister Laura can keep her supplies ready at hand, and have several easels positioned to best receive the natural light she needs from the existing windows over Saint Pauls Avenue.

Your donation to our Webathan will help us promote, in the words of Blessed James Alberione, “beauty at the service of truth,” providing the walls, flooring, insulation and ventilation for a real art studio where Sister Laura can work more easily, freed from some of the logistic distractions she currently labors under.

Join us in today's prayer that the media will be used more and more to promote all that is true, good, and beautiful. We'd love for you to share this page with others!

Prayer of an Artist

Heavenly Father, we bless you

for the gift of beauty, color, and sound

that can raise our hearts from the struggles and pains of this earth

and remind us of the glories of our homeland to come.

Awaken the artist that lies deep within the souls of each of us,

so we can rediscover ourselves in meaningful creative activity.

Remind us that art is the sacred imitation of you, our loving Creator.

Give success to the work of our hands, O Lord.

We ask this for the glory of your name.
