Equipping Disciples for mission through media mindfulness catechesis
The focus of Pauline Media Studies is to develop and encourage media literacy/media mindfulness within the context of culture, education, and faith formation. Pauline Media Studies, founded by Sister Rose Pacatte, FSP, began in Boston in 1995 and moved to Los Angeles in 2006. In 2015, an East Coast office opened in New York, directed by Sister Hosea Rupprecht, FSP, which was subsumed into the national office in 2022. Pauline Media Studies expresses an aspect of the mission of the Daughters of St. Paul: to educate and form the audience to critically discern the messages communicated through traditional mass media and emerging forms of social communication.
“For believers and people of good will, entertainment and information media have the potential to bring the human family closer together in justice and peace.” – Our Media World
Make yourself at home! Learn more about the offerings of Pauline Media Studies and the resources we provide. These resources can help you to be discerning about your media choices and to respond mindfully to the media you take in and engage through the lens of your faith. As religious sisters with a communications mission, we both consume and produce media; this gives us a unique perspective on how to engage media with analytical skills and faith.
Perceptive movie reviews explore each film from multiple perspectives—human, artistic, religious, and Catholic. Movie reviews at your fingertips that are both media-literate and faith-friendly can help you choose the best films for yourself and your family. Search for a thoughtful review of a recently-released movie, or browse to find a film that is not only artistically well-done, but conveys a powerful message.
Speakers from Pauline Media Studies offer film retreats and presentations on a variety of topics related to media literacy, media mindfulness, and faith formation in a digital age. Pauline Media Studies presentations are for all who want to connect faith with their everyday, media-saturated lives—from teachers and catechists to teens, parents, or parish prayer groups.
Our developing Resources section now includes Online Courses plus information for families, parishes, classrooms, and anyone else interested in the powerful influence of the media in our world today. Click below for a listing of our online course selection.
Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and participate with messages in a variety of forms, from print to video to the Internet. At the heart of media literacy is a strategy that questions media messages. Because we live in a world shaped by media values, messages, and technologies, media literacy is an educational and faith formation imperative for the 21st century.
